Things to Do in Larnaca

From beautiful Mediterranean beaches and ancient churches to spectacular diving experiences and peaceful salt lakes, discover some of Larnaca’s most memorable attractions.

Larnaca offers an enjoyable combination of history, nature and coastal relaxation. While many visitors arrive in Cyprus through the city’s international airport, Larnaca itself deserves more than a brief stop.

Here are some experiences I would recommend including in your itinerary.

Relax at Finikoudes Beach

Finikoudes Beach is one of Larnaca’s most popular attractions.

Located beside the palm-lined seafront promenade, it offers convenient access to restaurants, cafés and shops.

Spend a few hours swimming, relaxing on the sand or enjoying the Mediterranean sunshine.

The promenade is particularly pleasant in the evening.

Discover the Church of Saint Lazarus

The Church of Saint Lazarus is one of Larnaca’s most important historic landmarks.

Dating from the ninth century, this beautiful Byzantine church is associated with the biblical figure Lazarus, who according to tradition lived in Cyprus after his resurrection.

The surrounding historic streets are also worth exploring.

Visit Larnaca Salt Lake

Larnaca Salt Lake is a fascinating natural attraction located near the airport.

During winter and early spring, migratory flamingos can sometimes be seen feeding in the shallow water.

The lake often dries out during summer, creating a very different landscape.

Nearby Hala Sultan Tekke is another important historic site.

Explore the Zenobia Wreck

Larnaca is internationally known for the wreck of the MS Zenobia, a ferry that sank off the coast in 1980.

The wreck is a popular destination for experienced scuba divers.

Local diving operators offer trips to the site, with appropriate training and certification required for different types of dives.

Discover Mackenzie Beach

Mackenzie Beach offers a lively coastal atmosphere with beach bars, restaurants and views of aircraft approaching Larnaca Airport.

It is a particularly interesting place to visit if you enjoy watching planes.

Explore Larnaca Castle

Located at the southern end of Finikoudes, Larnaca Castle is a historic coastal fortification with views across the Mediterranean.

My advice is to spend one day exploring the historic centre and waterfront, then dedicate another day to the Salt Lake, Mackenzie Beach and the surrounding attractions.
