Food is one of the easiest ways to understand Larnaca. Cypriot cooking sits firmly in the Mediterranean world, but it has its own character shaped by Greek, Middle Eastern and regional influences. Meals are often social, generous and designed to be shared.
Simple ingredients, plenty of flavour
Expect olive oil, lemon, herbs, vegetables, grilled meat, pulses, cheese and seafood to appear regularly. Tomatoes, cucumber and fresh salads are particularly welcome during the hot Cypriot summer.
You do not need to search for complicated fine dining to eat well. Some of the most satisfying meals are built around a few good ingredients cooked simply.
Try Cypriot specialities
Halloumi is the obvious starting point, but do not stop there. Souvlaki, sheftalia sausages, slow-cooked dishes and a full Cypriot meze all deserve space on your holiday menu.
Seafood by the coast
Larnaca’s location naturally makes seafood another good choice. Fish tavernas and restaurants serve everything from grilled fish to calamari and other seafood, with availability varying by season and restaurant.
Take your time
Cypriot food is particularly enjoyable when you stop treating dinner as something to finish quickly. Order several dishes, share them and let the evening take its time.
My advice is to try both the waterfront and the streets away from the main tourist areas. A sea view is wonderful, but it is not a guarantee of the most interesting meal.
Come to Larnaca hungry. Between breakfast, bakery stops, meze and late dinners, food can easily become one of the best parts of the trip.
