Souvlaki is exactly the kind of food you want on holiday: uncomplicated, filling and easy to find. Pieces of meat are grilled on skewers and served simply, often with pita, salad and accompaniments.
A Cypriot everyday favourite
You will find souvlaki in casual restaurants, grill houses and takeaway spots around Larnaca. Pork is common in Cyprus, although other versions are also available.
The best examples do not need much decoration. Good grilling, fresh bread and a few simple sides do most of the work.
Try sheftalia too
When ordering grilled food in Cyprus, look out for sheftalia. These seasoned Cypriot sausages are often cooked over charcoal and can be served alongside souvlaki.
A mixed serving is an easy way to try both.
Lunch, dinner or late-night food
Souvlaki works at almost any time. It can be a quick lunch between sightseeing stops or an informal dinner when you do not feel like spending the evening in a restaurant.
Go where locals go
This is one dish where I would happily leave the seafront and look around residential streets for a busy grill house. If a simple place has a steady stream of local customers, that is usually encouraging.
Menus, opening hours and businesses change, so explore rather than relying entirely on an old list of recommended addresses.
You will probably eat more elaborate meals during your stay in Larnaca, but a good souvlaki straight from the grill may be the one you remember.
