Larnaca International Airport – Your Gateway to Cyprus

For many visitors, Larnaca International Airport (LCA) is the first place they see in Cyprus. The good news is that it is an easy airport to understand and, even better, it sits very close to Larnaca itself. You can land, collect your luggage and be on your way to the beach or hotel without beginning the holiday with a long transfer.

Arriving at Larnaca Airport

The terminal is modern and straightforward. After passport control when required and baggage reclaim, you emerge into the arrivals area where you will find car rental desks and access to taxis, buses and shuttle services.

Free Wi-Fi is available at the airport, which is useful if you need to contact your accommodation or check your route before leaving. There are also ATMs, currency services and luggage storage facilities.

Getting from the airport to Larnaca

Larnaca is only a short journey from the airport. Taxis operate 24 hours a day from the designated taxi area outside Arrivals on Level 0. For many travelers with luggage, especially couples or families, this is the simplest way to reach a hotel.

Public buses also connect the airport with Larnaca. Cyprus Public Transport operates services in the Larnaca region, while airport shuttle companies provide connections to other parts of Cyprus. If your final destination is Limassol, Nicosia or elsewhere on the island, check the current shuttle timetable before you fly.

Hiring a car

If you plan to explore beyond Larnaca, renting a car can make a lot of sense. Five car rental companies have desks at the airport after you leave the baggage reclaim area.

Remember that Cyprus drives on the left. Visitors from the UK will find this familiar, while travelers from most of continental Europe may need a little time to adjust. I would avoid making your first drive unnecessarily complicated after a late-night arrival.

Plane spotting at Mackenzie Beach

One unusual thing about Larnaca Airport is how close the runway is to Mackenzie Beach. Aircraft approaching the airport pass low over the coast, making the beach one of Larnaca’s best-known plane-spotting locations.

If aviation interests you, it is worth returning after you have checked into your hotel. Sitting beside the Mediterranean while aircraft descend overhead is a surprisingly memorable Larnaca experience.

Flying home from Larnaca

For departure, do not confuse the airport’s compact size with a reason to arrive at the last minute. Check your airline’s recommended arrival time and allow extra time during busy holiday periods.

After security you will find shops, food and drink, lounges and other passenger services. Larnaca Airport also offers an Express Lane that can be booked for faster access through security.

My advice for first-time visitors

If you are staying in Larnaca itself, I would not automatically rent a car just because you arrive at an airport. The city is close, taxis and buses are available, and much of central Larnaca is easy to explore without driving. Rent a car when you actually want to start exploring the rest of Cyprus.

If Larnaca is only your arrival point, however, the airport is well positioned for continuing across the island. Check current bus and shuttle schedules before traveling, particularly for evening arrivals, and you can make the transfer from aircraft to holiday remarkably painless.
