Mackenzie Beach is one of the easiest places in Larnaca to spend an entire day without making much of a plan. You have a long stretch of sand, the Mediterranean in front of you and plenty of places nearby for coffee, lunch or an evening drink.
A beach close to the city
Mackenzie sits south of central Larnaca, making it convenient if you want a proper beach day without travelling to another resort. The water is generally shallow close to shore, although you should always pay attention to local swimming conditions and safety information.
Watch the planes
What makes Mackenzie different from most Mediterranean beaches is its location beside Larnaca International Airport. Aircraft regularly approach over the sea, passing surprisingly close to the beach before landing.
If you enjoy aviation, it is a fantastic place for plane spotting. Even if you do not, seeing a large aircraft appear over the Mediterranean tends to get your attention.
Stay into the evening
Mackenzie is not only about sunbathing. Restaurants, cafés and bars along the beachfront give the area plenty of life after the hottest part of the day has passed.
I would come in the afternoon, swim, stay for sunset and then have dinner nearby rather than immediately heading back into central Larnaca.
Easy-going Larnaca
Mackenzie does not require a sightseeing checklist. Bring your swimwear, sunscreen and enough time to do very little.
For visitors staying in Larnaca, it is one of those places you may end up returning to several times during the same holiday.
